Tears of Eros, a major exhibition devoted to the torments of passion: the dark side of sexual desire. The title of the exhibition is taken from the book by the French writer Georges Bataille, Les larmes d’Eros, and is based on a number of his ideas on eroticism, such as the prohibition/transgression dialectic and the identification of the erotic with religious sacrifice. The exhibition has a global, pansexual character, covering the widest range of orientations and types of desire: the male and female gaze and the heterosexual and homosexual one, voyeurism and exhibitionism, bondage and sadomasochism, and the different varieties of fetishism. All these differing aspects are to be found within the compendium of the myths of Eros, both those deriving from the Greco-Roman Olympus and those originating in the Bible. The present exhibition illustrates the survival of these myths up to the present day and their transformation in the modern era, a process that has given them new, perverse meanings.

This is the first retrospective exhibition of the work of the French painter Henri Fantin-Latour to be held in Spain. It is jointly organised with the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon, where it can be seen from 26 June to 6 September 2009. An artist of the generation of Manet, Degas and Whistler, Fantin-Latour (Grenoble, 1836 – Buré, 1904) shared many of their ideas but for various complex reasons has not been considered one of the great pioneers of modern art. The present exhibition aims to rectify that position and will present a comprehensive selection of more than 70 oil paintings and drawings representing the finest examples of his work, loaned from museums and collections worldwide.

The aim of this exhibition is to offer a broad overview of the concepts, issues and solutions involved in the depiction of shadows in art from the Renaissance to the present day. The exhibition is organised into two closely related sections. Firstly, it presents a comprehensive survey of the work of artists and movements who have depicted and used the element of shadow in various ways from the Renaissance to the late 19th century. These range from symbolic connotations and the way that Renaissance artists studied and used perspective to the representation of light and shade in Impressionism, also looking at the spectacular way that tenebrist Baroque painters used this element as well as its incorporation as a crucial narrative element in the Romantic and post-Romantic periods. The second part, which will be shown in the exhibition space of Fundación Caja Madrid, opens with a section on “lights and shadows in modern art” and analyses these elements were represented during the 20th century. This section pays special attention to the manner in which they were projected in Surrealist games and their important role in German Expressionism. The other sections in the second part offer a survey of the multi-media and light-hearted use of shadow play, from the photography of Man Ray and André Kertész to recent installations by Christian Boltanski, also looking at cinema in the work of Murnau, Orson Welles and Peter Greenaway.

The Annunciation Diptych by Jan van Eyck, which is one of the gems in the Museum’s permanent collection, is also one of the most important examples of grisaille painting. This was a widely used and highly appreciated technique from the late 14th onwards, based on the graduated application of a single colour, generally grey or neutral tones, which modelled the shadows to create an effect of sculptural relief. For the first time the exhibition will compare various examples of late Medieval grisaille depictions in the media of drawing and painting as well as ivories, illuminations, textiles and glass and metal objects. The aim is to offer a survey of this technique with the intention of investigating its possible artistic, social and practical implications.

This catalog shows the exposure of Ghirlandaio and the Renaissance in Florence, a tour of the Quattrocento Florentine art that has as starting point one of the icons of its permanent collection: the portrait of Giovanna degli Albizzi Tornabuoni by Domenico Ghirlandaio painted between 1489 and 1490. Around this undisputed masterpiece of Florentine art, the exhibition will bring together a select group of 60 works, both paintings and sculptures, drawings, illuminated manuscripts, medals and other objects to illustrate three key areas of art and culture in Florence late fifteenth century: the genre of portraiture, the subject of love and marriage, and religious iconography.

Accompanying the artist’s first American retrospective in over thirty years, The Baroque World of Fernando Botero is the most extensive study of his life and work to date. Drawn exclusively from Botero’s private collection, the 100 works featured in this book, including previously unpublished paintings and drawings, represent the full scope of his oeuvre from a uniquely personal perspective. Many of these—portraits of friends and family members and remembered scenes—have remained in the artist’s possession since their creation, while others he has bought back over the years as markers of significant developments in his career. Three essays examine the artist’s creative life, from the aesthetic environment in which Botero developed his unique style to his catalyzing influence on the Colombian art world of the 1960's and 70's.

The exhibition offers a dialogue between these two artists who, although belonging to different periods have a common reference in the influence exercised on their work by the city of Venice, one of the most beautiful in the world, where art and water mingle intimately in everyday life. The exhibition consists of over two hundred works, concentrating basically on small-format works on paper (etchings, drawings, watercolours and pastels) by both artists.

Winslow Homer's luminous watercolor seascapes and highly spirited portraits of children and outdoorsmen are some of the most recognizable and cherished works in the history of American art. This catalogue, published in conjunction with a major traveling exhibition, examines his pictures from the 1870s, the least-studied period of this perennially popular American artist. Debunking the common myth that Homer worked in isolation, Margaret Conrads reveals him as a controversial artist who was an integral part of the dizzying New York art scene of the 1870s. Indeed, Homer was the American artist most frequently discussed by the press at this time -often with simultaneous commendation and vilification.

This exhibition presents a survey of Miró´s work in th period between 1918, the year of his first solo exhibition, and his death in 1983. The guiding concept is a recurring theme in his work: the earth. In contrast to other art historical interpretations which have emphasised the artist´s links with Surrealism, the present exhibition will focus on his fidelity to rural and pagan life, his fascination with excess, fecundity -including sexuality- and death. Seen from this viewpoint, Miró´s work in the second half of his life acquires greater importance than is usually acredited to it.

The 22nd exhibition in the Contexts of the Permanent Collection series will be devoted to Pieter Saenredam (1597-1665), one of the most notable painters of the 17th century, swo devoted much of his oeuvre to the depiction of buildings, seen from both inside and outside. Saenredam was also a pioneer in his investigation of perspectie and in his use of preparatory sdetches and measurements taken in situ, which provided the starting-point for his paintings. These practices distinguish him from his predecessors and from other contemporary artists. Saenredam produced numerous preparatory sketches in Haarlem where he lived, and he also moved to other villages and cities such as Assendelft, Utrecht, Amsterdam, Rhenen and Alkmaar in order to draw and take measurementes. This exhibition will offer a surey of his work and will include his finest and most exquisitely painted compositiones created over the course of his career.

Fra Angelico. The Virgin of Humility, sponsored by Banco Urquijo, is the 18th in the Thyssen-Bornemisza’s Contexts of the Permanent Collection series. On this occasion the focus of the exhibition was the magnificent panel by the Italian artist normally on display at the Museu d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC). The exhibition analyses two types of Virgins that were widely represented in art over the centuries, and of which the collection has particularly fine examples. They are the Virgin of Humility and the Virgin enthroned with the Christ Child.

English edition

Hardcover

Fernand Leger (1881-1955) is one of the few Modernist artists that can be said to have anticipated both American Abstraction and American Pop, and to have made a deliberate relationship with American culture: He visited the U.S. several times, and during the Second World War, from 1940 to 1945, he lived in exile in New York. In America, Leger found much to admire--above all, a dynamic embrace of industry sympathetic to his own quasi-Futurist love of technological energies. An early critic of Leger described him as more of a "Tubist" than a Cubist, noting the cool metal cylinders that fill his early work. It was through such motifs that the artist approached modern life, viewing industry as a force for the good and its translation into art as a Modern vernacular. "Our pictures are our slang," he optimistically declared towards the end of his stay in New York. During that time, Leger had produced some of his most important works, which found a ready audience in the younger American artists surrounding him.

"Paris-New York" covers the artist's entire oeuvre, from the Cubist-influenced early work to the later, cheerful large-format paintings. Special attention is paid to the American dimension of Leger's oeuvre, and the volume traces his impact on American artists--primarily on Roy Lichtenstein and Ellsworth Kelly, but also on other late twentieth-century artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Al Held, Jasper Johns, James Rosenquist, Frank Stella and Andy Warhol.

Known as "the notary" by his contemporaries for his very proper disposition, Georges Seurat (1859-1891), was nonetheless a trailblazing artist, who devised mesmerizing effects in paint, creating what Museum of Modern Art, New York director Alfred Barr described as a "strange, almost breathless poise." Seurat's most famous painting, "La Grande Jatte" (1884), exemplifies the airy suspension of which "Pointillism" (as his style of painting-by-dabs was named) is uniquely capable, a sensation well suited to evoking in paint the sedate pace of Paris' new leisure class. For Seurat, Pointillism was also a way to attain for painting the mathematically explicable harmony of music: "Art is Harmony. Harmony is the analogy of the contrary and of similar elements of tone, of color and of line, considered according to their dominance and under the influence of light, in gay, calm or sad combinations," he declared in a letter to a friend. Seurat's style lent itself especially well to the portrayal of figures in space, and the endowing of those figures with volume and atmosphere.

Hardcover

Willem de Kooning is celebrated in the United States as one of the most significant artists of the 20th century and a leading Abstract Expressionist. In Europe, however, the artist has yet to be fully recognized, particularly with regards to his work of the 1960s and 1970s, when he retreated from urban life to live and work on Long Island. This segment of de Kooning's oeuvre bears the imprint of a fundamental experience of the landscape, for it was in these Long Island works that he developed a new style of figuration, characterized by a transformed sense of color and energetic gesture. This period of vigorous, pioneering creativity is illuminated for the first time in this volume, which features a concentrated selection of large-format paintings. In images and essays by Klaus Kertess, Harold Rosenberg, and others, the book illustrates how de Kooning's paintings--although recognizable as landscapes--grew abstract under the influence of his intense experience of nature.

This survey of leading women artists from the late twentieth century examines the crucial feminist contribution to the deconstructivist movement. The practice of deconstructivism, a term describing artwork that examines the imagery of the popular media, was significantly shaped by dozens of important female artists during a critical era in late twentieth-century visual culture. These artists subverted their source material, often by appropriating it, to expose the ways that commercial images express imbalances of power. The mechanisms of power in mainstream art institutions were also subject to these artists' critique. This exhibition catalogue features a diverse group of North American women whose transformative and often provocative work deals with gender, sexual, racial, ethnic, and class-based inequities. Among the artists included in the book are Dara Birnbaum, Sarah Charlesworth, The Guerrilla Girls, Susan Hiller, Jenny Holzer, Mary Kelly, Silvia Kolbowski, Barbara Kruger, Louise Lawler, Martha Rosler, Cindy Sherman, Laurie Simmons, Lorna Simpson, Carrie Mae Weems, and others.

English edition

Hardcover

The great American artist William Merritt Chase (1849–1916) completed a wide variety of portraits over his long career. Among his subjects were presidents, businessmen, celebrities, New York luminaries, and members of his family as well as a number of self-portraits. Chase’s ability to capture a likeness was renowned, yet it was his dashing and bravura brushwork that truly set his portraits apart.

This highly anticipated book presents the entire collection of Chase’s known portraits in oil. Each is gorgeously reproduced, and many are published in color for the first time. This is the second of four volumes cataloguing the complete works of William Merritt Chase. The catalogue raisonné project has presented immense challenges, for Chase kept no records at all, and staggering numbers of forgeries of his work appeared soon after he died. Finding many of his portraits was especially difficult, as no log book of sitters has been located and no other records exist for those works that were not publicly exhibited. Nevertheless, Ronald G. Pisano’s meticulous research has uncovered more than six hundred portraits in private and public collections. Among the most notable are Chase’s penetrating portrait of James Abbott McNeill Whistler (The Metropolitan Museum of Art), a commanding portrait of Dora Wheeler (Cleveland Museum of Art), The Feather Fan featuring Chase’s oldest daughter, Alice (Musée d’Orsay, Paris), and a 1908 self-portrait (Uffizi Gallery, Florence).

Known for his brilliant cartoons and award-winning children's books, William Steig (1907-2003) leaves a legacy that spans much of the 20th century. This lavishly illustrated book features over 250 of Steig's drawings, many of them previously unpublished, and examines every aspect of his work, from his early 'Small Fry' cartoons and haunting symbolic drawings in response to World War II, to his bitingly funny New Yorker cartoons and celebrated books for children. In the seventy-three years that he worked for the New Yorker, Steig produced over 120 covers and more than 1,600 drawings in a wide range of styles, including classic cartoons, psychologically fraught pen-and-ink renderings, and Picasso-esque representations. He brought a new voice to the magazine by creating cartoons that drew on his experience as a son of immigrant Eastern European Jews. In his sixties, Steig embarked on a second career as a writer and illustrator of children's books, including "Sylvester and the Magic Pebble" and "Shrek!". These remarkable projects bring together numerous key elements of Steig's work: his interest in cranks, complainers, reverie, and animal-characters, and his idealization of love and friendship. The story of Steig's work is told by scholar Claudia Nahson and the cartoonist's fellow artists, writers, and family members. Together they create a portrait of a penetrating social observer with a restless imagination and a love for his craft.

Famous for their new treatment of heroic, antique subjects and the depiction of the male nude in action, Antonio and Piero del Pollaiuolo ran one of the most successful and advanced workshops in fifteenth-century Florence. This comprehensive and beautifully illustrated book reexamines the brothers’ careers and multifaceted work to present a fresh understanding of their contributions to the development of Italian art.

Art historian Alison Wright draws on new evidence to reassess the Pollaiuolo brothers’ activities as painters, sculptors, and designers and to set their work in the context of the changing social, political, and cultural life of both Florence and Rome. She considers Antonio’s and Piero’s innovations as well as their self-conscious development of distinct products in precious or novel media. The book provides the definitive account of the Pollaiuolo brothers and their practices, a comprehensive list of their works (including some newly attributed), and a fully updated chronology.

In the city of Ferrara, a major cultural and artistic center of Renaissance Italy, Cosme Tura (c. 1430-1495) came to prominence as painter to the Este court. This book offers a new and wide-ranging approach to Tura's life and his enigmatic and stylistically idiosyncratic works. Stephen Campbell takes the career of Tura as a starting point for the investigation of such intriguing issues as the fifteenth-century artist's role and status in both court and urban culture and the bearing these conceptions may have had on Tura's distinctive style. Campbell also provides an account of the role of the image in Ferrara's religious, political, and intellectual life, broadening our understanding of the Renaissance beyond traditional discussions of visual culture that focus on Rome, Florence, and Venice. The author discusses also how Tura and his contemporaries addressed local themes of ethnic, political, and religious tension in their works. Among the works by Tura that this book examines closely are a cycle of paintings of the Muses created for the Studio of Leonello d'Este in 1447; an altarpiece commissioned by the powerful Roverella family, showing the Madonna enthroned on the Tabernacle; and four organ-shutter panels for Ferrara Cathedral depicting St. George and the Princess and an Annunciation. Campbell shows how the fascinating peculiarities of Tura's individual works resonate within the broader cultural contexts defined by the court, ecclesiastical groups, and humanist thinkers. Further, Campbell argues that Tura's work anticipates later inventions associated with Leonardo da Vinci at the court of Milan and with Mantegna at Mantua.

On January 26, 1957, Richard Hamilton wrote a now-famous letter outlining his definition of what “Pop Art Is.” This volume celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of Hamilton’s prophetic document, presenting the works of more than forty artists from his own generation of Pop artists (among them Hamilton himself, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, and Andy Warhol) and from artists of subsequent generations who have contributed to the development and dissemination of Pop Art (Jeff Koons, Richard Prince, Mike Kelley, Damien Hirst, and others).

A text by Greil Marcus, a photographic essay by Louise Lawler, and an interview with Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown by Dan Graham are included in the book, which illuminates the powerful, international impact of Pop Art throughout the second half of the 20th century. Pop represented a sudden and dramatic expansion of often-contradictory possibilities, and for this reason and others the concept of Pop remains vital in contemporary art.

English edition

Hardcover

Andy Warhol said about his road trip to Los Angeles in 1963: "The farther West we drove, the more Pop everything looked on the highways." In this original and engaging book, Cécile Whiting examines what Pop looked like when it left the highbrow cloisters of Manhattan's art galleries and ventured westward to the sprawling suburbs of Los Angeles. She finds that the artists who made California their home in the 1960s did not abandon their paint brushes for tennis rackets and surfboards, but rather created in their works a new and different sense of space, the urban experience, and popular culture.

Whiting shows how artists such as Vija Celmins, Llyn Foulkes, David Hockney, Dennis Hopper, Allan Kaprow, Claes Oldenburg, Ed Ruscha, and Judy Chicago helped to shape the identity of Los Angeles as an emerging art center, while avoiding in their representation of the city the clichés of both its boosters and its detractors. Delving deep into the southern California aesthetic sensibility, Pop L.A. recounts how the artists transformed the image of the city in works that focused on the ocean and landscape, suburban life, dilapidated houses in aging neighborhoods, streets and parking lots, and public buildings such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The common bond of place, for Whiting, gives coherence to the varied experiments in the visual and performance arts that altered the cultural terrain during this pivotal time. The Los Angeles art scene in the 1960s inspired a new generation of architectural writing about the metropolis and its debased sister city, Las Vegas. Over the course of the decade, the conception of the city pioneered by artists in Los Angeles spread beyond the city of angels to characterize cultural life in the United States.

Since the beginning of the 20 century, artists and architects have often been in collaboration. This relationship was not necessarily without conflict on the contrary, a productive tension and friction can often be found at the basis of their common endeavors. However, wherever art and architecture establish a common territory in the public arena, highly integrated schemes may result that are of particular appeal and quality. In recent years, the barriers between art and architecture have come down even further; while many artists are attracted to the spatial presence of architecture and its language and scale, contemporary architects also seek the inspiration of art and include artistic concepts into their designs. Great works of art/architecture have resulted from these cooperations and this book explores them in nine chapters from 1914 up to the present, highlighting the most striking examples of these interdisciplinary activities such as the LACMA scheme by Renzo Piano/Jeff Koons in Los Angeles, the Chichu Art Museum by Tadao Ando with its installation by Walter de Maria, the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale by David Adjaye with artist Chris Ofili or the work by Keith Sonnier in the Munich Re Building by Baumschlager Eberle.

The volume traces a panorama, one never before observed, of the last century of Italian art within a "global" framework, choosing, that is, the most distanced and wide-ranging perspective in order to be the most all-inclusive outside Italy and outside Europe. It is therefore shown that Italian art sometimes presents itself as homogeneous with international avant-garde and neo-avant-garde movements, sometimes as dishomogeneous, recovering a specificity drawn from its own prestigious cultural past, with foundations distinct from its historical present.

Nikos Stangos' poems, while rooted in the specifics of his life, deal with broad philosophical issues: the nature of beauty, love, art, and reason. All the works in this posthumous volume, selected by the writer David Plante, are published for the first time here. Accompanying the poems are works of art contributed by some of the eminent painters and sculptors who knew and worked with Stangos, including David Hockney, Jasper Johns, Howard Hodgkin, Anthony Caro, Frank Auerbach, Maggi Hambling, and Bridget Riley. Some have produced work that refers directly to one of the poems; others have selected images inspired by Stangos himself or reflective of his personality. A passionate supporter of new trends in art, Stangos also formed lasting friendships with younger artists such as Julian Opie, Liam Gillick, Lisa Milroy, and Martin Maloney. Their works, and those of all the contributors to this unique book, stand as a testament to the esteem in which Stangos was held, and as a tribute to his enduring memory. 40 color illustrations.

Why are women artists of the Italian Renaissance and Baroque so relatively unknown today when, during their lifetimes, their artistic merits were celebrated by their foremost contemporaries? Italian Women Artists of the Renaissance and Baroque aims to provide the first survey of women professionally active as painters, engravers and sculptors in 16th and 17th century Italy, and to document the sociocultural context that contributed to shape their lives and oeuvres. This catalogue, published in association with the travelling exhibition which opens at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington D. C., examines the artistic practices and achievements of these remarkable women who managed to gain public, if not international, acclaim. Featuring 60 outstanding works by a dozen of the foremost Italian female artists, this volume offers an unparalleled opportunity to understand their social, personal, and stylistic developments.

This scholarly publication will undoubtedly make a significant contribution to the re-emergence of these women as artists of stature and thus constitute a new departure for historical investigations into the way gender has affected how we perceive works of art and into issues of attributions and art market economics.

Widely acknowledged in his time as a premier painter of still-life and genre scenes, Jean-Baptiste-Simion Chardin (1699-1779) created unsentimentalised works that appeal to viewers today for their richness of feeling and simplicity of composition. This sumptuously illustrated book reproduces in full colour 99 of Chardin's works and arranges them around five themes: Chardin's Beginnings and His First Still-lifes, Utensils and Household Objects, Genre Scenes, Chardin's Return to Still-life, and Pastels. The contributors to the volume explore Chardin's work from many different angles, including the latest thinking on such lesser-known facets of his life and work as his use of ceramics and glass, his financial and property affairs, and the complex history of engravings of his paintings. Each of the five sections of the book has an introduction and a selection of Chardin's paintings accompanied on facing pages by complete provenance, exhibition, and bibliographic information. The book also offers an extensive Chardin biography, an index of names and places, and an index of works. lugar de exposición e información bibliográfica.

This book is the catalogue of an international exhibition of Chardin's work, timed to coincide with the third centenary of his birth. The exhibition opens at the Galeries nationales du Grand Palais in Paris from 7 September to 22 November 1999, and then travels to the Kunstmuseum and Kunsthalle in D|sseldorf from 5 December 1999 to 20 February 2000, the Royal Academy in London from 9 March to 28 May 2000 and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York from 19 June to 17 September 2000.

Almost twenty years after the creation of the Musee d’Orsay, the 19th century seems more than ever to be the “Golden Age” of French art. It boasts names such as Ingres and Delacroix, Manet and Puvis de Chavannes, Gustave Eiffel and Charles Garnier. French art became a universally accepted benchmark, spreading the discoveries of Impressionism, the Haussmann models, and the daring of art nouveau far beyond its borders, and receiving in return, in the form of the countless artists who flocked to its hub, numerous influences from abroad. Other key movements associated with the19th century include Romanticism; Neo-Classicism, “orientalism,” and japonisme; Realism; the Barbizon School and plein-air painting; Neo-Impression, Cloissonism, and the Nabis; and Symbolism. This complete, chronological history is illustrated by more than 400 illustrations and covers painting, sculpture, and architecture, as well as the advent of photography, its impact on painting, and its emergence as an art form of its own.

The catalogue of a fall 2007 exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, The Art of the American Snapshot reproduces some 250 snapshots drawn from Robert Jackson's outstanding collection and from a recent gift Jackson made to the museum. Organized decade by decade, the book traces the evolution of American snapshot imagery and describes how technical, social, and cultural factors affected the look of snapshots at different periods.
