Exhibition at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza from 25 June to 20 October 2024.

Colonial Memory in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collections is a re-reading of a selection of 73 works, made up exclusively of works of art from the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, the Carmen Thyssen Collection and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary Collection (TBA21), and covers a long stretch of the history of Western art from the 17th century to the present day. It analyses the imprint on art (not always explicit and almost always ignored) of the main features of European colonialism: the overexploitation of overseas territories and their populations, the racial construction that imposes a hierarchy according to skin colour, slavery and violent domination, the idealisation of the landscape and life in the colonies, the sexualisation of the inhabitants of the colonised territories (especially women) and finally the testimonies of resistance, from the maroonage to the struggle for civil rights.
