Photography served Impressionism not only as an iconographic source but also as a technical inspiration, both in the scientific observation of light and in the representation of an asymmetrical and truncated space, as well as in the exploration of spontaneity and visual ambiguity. Likewise, influenced by the new Impressionist technique, some photographers began to focus on the materiality of their images and to seek ways to make their photographs less precise and more painterly."

The pivotal role photography has acquired in the contemporary art scene has revived interest in art history regarding the impact of its invention on the visual arts. The exhibition "The Impressionists and Photography ," and this accompanying catalogue, contribute to this historiographical approach, offering a critical reflection on the affinities and mutual influences between photography and painting, while also considering the fruitful debate among critics and artists that its emergence sparked in France during the second half of the 19th century.

Text by Paloma Alarcó, Head of Modern Painting Conservation, Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum.

Dimensions: 200 x 275 mm (width x height)

288 pages

Language: English.

Hardcover binding.

ISBN: 9788417173340

This publication was produced in collaboration with the Community of Madrid, JTI, and Samsung The Frame.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0629/4221/6345/files/pp00230_9788417173340_cat_impresionistas_fotografia_tapa_dura_eng_to.jpg?v=1715619807
guia-japones-breve-2010
Brief Guide to the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection: Japanese

Brief guide to the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum Collection

Japanese language edition.

13 x 20 cm.

76 pages.

62 Color illustrations.

Paperback.

The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza is now making available to readers a pocket guide that aims to bring the public closer to some of the masterpieces - sixty-two in particular - belonging to both the permanent collection of the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, which was added to its galleries in 2004. Always outside the mainstream of 20th-century art, the esteemed portraitist observed his subjects with the rigor and precision of a scientist in his laboratory. He captured not only the spots, bruises and swellings of the body, but also the microscopic details beneath the flaws and folds of the flesh: the sensation, the emotion, the intelligence, the splendor and the inevitable, unstoppable decay. Despite his rejection of parallels between himself and his famous grandfather, the correlation between Lucian Freud’s portrait-painting process and Sigmund Freud’s psychotherapy sessions is a fascinating element of this figurative work. Despite the thickness of the surfaces in the impasto technique, Freud’s portraits of such disparate figures as the Queen of England, Kate Moss and an obese employment office supervisor go beyond the physical with an unmistakable and often overwhelming perception. But what about the flâneuses? They also existed, even if they were made invisible or reviled. Their desire to make themselves present in the urban space and claim their own voice paved the way for a series of rights that we still need to consolidate today: the right to occupy the streets; the right to look without being seen; the right not to consume or be consumed; the right to exist alone; the right to authorship. This critical journey through the history of the flâneuses, which brings together a large group of writers, thinkers and activists, is fully valid and becomes a literary and feminist manifesto that claims walking as an act of insubordination. In 1917, he co-founded De Stijl, which began as a publication and later developed into a circle of devotees committed to a strict geometric art of horizontal and vertical lines. that we collectively neglect. Far from being a pristine natural landscape, the continent is a contested territory hiding resources that could prove irresistible in a world with an ever-increasing population. The 26 trillion tons of ice accumulated on its bedrock – equivalent to about 70% of our planet’s fresh water – represent the most important repository of scientific data available. It provides crucial information for future environmental policies and, at the same time, is the greatest possible threat to global coastal settlements when sea levels rise due to global warming.

On the 200th anniversary of Antarctica’s discovery, Antarctic Resolution offers a high-resolution picture of this hyper-surveilled yet forgotten continent. But the origins of the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection date back to the early years of the 20th century, when the German industrialist August Thyssen (1842-1926) acquired seven Rodin marbles for his Landsberg castle. It was Heinrich (1875-1947), August’s son, who became Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza, who, after his father’s death in 1926, began to acquire what are still the main paintings and sculptures by old masters in this collection. Following Heinrich's death in 1947, his son and main heir, Hans Heinrich (1921-2002), first set about rebuilding his father's collection by buying back some of his brothers' inherited works, and then expanding it with new acquisitions, and in 1961 he also started a collection of modern masters. Hans Heinrich ("Heini") promoted the international dissemination of his collection by commissioning the publication of specialist catalogues and organising exhibitions throughout the world. In 1988, the baron and his Spanish wife, Carmen, signed an agreement with the Spanish government to exhibit 775 masterpieces from their collection to the public, and four years later, in 1992, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum opened its doors within the former walls of the Villahermosa Palace, in an interior designed by the architect Rafael Moneo. Since then, 715 works have been displayed within its walls. In June 1993, the collection was acquired by the Spanish State. The Carmen Thyssen Collection was born as a natural continuation of the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection with the agreement reached with Carmen Thyssen for her collection to be deposited in the museum. In it, using the figures of Ulysses, Aeneas and Hannah Arendt, the author analyses, at the same time as the feeling, the relationship between home or "fatherland", exile and mother tongue. However, perhaps the greatest contribution of this essential book for all those who feel affected by this "illness" is its investigation into whether it is possible - and how - to develop the link between nostalgia and the native soil (or "patriotism"), to turn it into an adventure of another kind that can take us to the threshold of a broader and more welcoming thought, of a vision of the world freed from any affiliation.

The New York School of Poetry.
