My Europe

These two essays, each written by an outstanding and singular young "peripheral" writer (Andrukhovich is Ukrainian and Stasiuk, Polish) are an expression of the yearning for a balance of forces between a West, promise of dubious well-being, and an East resigned by a past that has opened a void of difficult solution. My Europe, besides being an attempt to capture that almost mystical link that exists between man and his place, is a portrait of the passage of time, at the crossroads between two centuries and a new Europe under construction.
