Variaciones" Hardcover Catalog

The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza inaugurates the first retrospective of Carmen Laffón, one of our essential artists, since her passing in 2021. In this project, conceived and executed by the museum's Head of Exhibitions, Paula Luengo, the two fundamental genres of Laffón's work, still life and landscape, are alternated and sometimes intertwined: the close look at everyday objects and the gaze towards the distance. In turn, in the approach to the object—be it a table, a small cabinet, or a basket with grapes—the languages of painting and sculpture engage in an intimate dialogue.

Starting from an early commitment to realistic figuration, Laffón refined her vision under the influence of contemporary abstract painting, from the lyrical abstraction of a Fernando Zóbel to the post-minimalism of Agnes Martin or Robert Ryman (whose presence we can feel in the infinite nuances of white in Laffón's last series, dedicated to whitewash and salt flats). In her long series of versions of the landscape of Coto de Doñana seen from Sanlúcar, Laffón approaches abstraction as closely as possible without becoming entirely abstract, without completely losing the link with a place.

"Theme and Variations" is the name of one of the oldest musical forms. In the title of this exhibition and in the quote from Ernest Chesneau that heads the curator's essay, the "theme" has disappeared; only the variations remain. There is no original on which the successive versions depend, and all of them present the same value, the same truth. This is the essential modernity of Carmen Laffón's work. The variations modify the sense of time; in Laffón there is no linear development, but an incessant return.

Hardcover binding with printed cloth

Format: 18.5 x 24.5 cm

192 pages

Authors: Paula Luengo (curator), Estrella de Diego and Carmen Laffón

77 catalog works of painting and sculpture

ISBN: 9791387729172
