Juan Cabello Arribas: The Geography of Collage and the Language of Mixed Media

Juan Cabello is a border artist who lives between Portugal, Brazil, and Spain, developing a transdisciplinary practice and exploring the geography of collage as a territory of freedom where anything is possible.

Career path

Juan Cabello's training as an architect led him to London, where he pursued his doctoral studies between the Whitechapel Gallery and Tate Modern. In that environment, his creative universe began to expand beyond architecture, finding a new language of expression in collage.

His studio was born in 2010, after his move to São Paulo, Brazil. Although he had been working with collage since finishing his studies, it was in the tropics that he solidified his position as an artist and designer. There, he began to exhibit in museums and galleries, and to build bridges with the design world. Between 2014 and 2018, he developed textile pieces for the brand PhD Galeria, initiating a path that led him to collaborate with musicians, cultural institutions, and fashion projects, creating everything from album covers to visual identities.

Currently, this trajectory culminates in a textile collection for the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, inspired by its permanent collection.

Creation process

Juan Cabello's creations always begin with a meticulous and extensive observation process. Through it, he not only discovers the images that can form part of his compositions but also the visual sense that will guide what they will become. This is followed by a process of analysis, selection, and extraction that leads to multiple possible combinations. Cabello superimposes, experiments, and reconstructs until the work's internal dialogue finds a clear meaning—or several—and the composition achieves its balance.

Juan Cabello always works manually: each composition arises from the physical act of cutting and assembling. He exclusively uses original material, extracting his cutouts from carefully selected books, official museum catalogs, and magazines.

Subsequently, some pieces evolve through digital processes that expand their possibilities, although their origin always remains artisanal. This digitalization in the final phase allows him to adjust and prepare each piece for application on different media.

In the finishing of the products, he pays special attention to the choice of organic materials, such as cotton and other natural fibers, thus maintaining consistency between the artisanal origin of the work and its final materiality.
