Mosaista: handcrafted hydraulic tiles inspired by avant-garde movements

The hydraulic tile brand Mosaista and the shop of the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza present this innovative collaboration: a series of hydraulic tiles inspired by works from the museum's permanent collection, by artists such as Sándor Bortnyik, Paul Klee, Juan Gris, Theo van Doesburg, Edward Hopper, and Wassily Kandinsky. These unique, limited-edition pieces are fragments that form murals or objects and are made using the traditional artisanal production technique of hydraulic tiles.

Resulting from the Thyssen shop team's search for collaborations with brands that combine tradition, excellence, and design, this collaboration has emerged between Mosaista/Iván Alvarado, the Thyssen Museum, and the artist and designer Carlota Pereiro, who has reinterpreted fragments of works from the museum's collections in the form of artisanal mosaics. The geometry of the avant-garde and the tradition of artisanal hydraulic mosaic merge into a unique collection.

Handcrafted tradition and design

This type of tile was used in much of the world from the late 19th century onwards, and became extraordinarily widespread as it represented a decorative solution that bridged the gap between artisan work and industrial production. The key to its success was the ability to endlessly reproduce countless patterns to fit the surface to be covered, which allowed for an extraordinary diversity of designs.

After its use declined with the advent of large-scale construction, the last factory of this type of tile in Madrid closed in 1979. Mosaista, however, revived Miguel Adrover's technique, a guarantee of quality since the 19th century, in 2000. Since then, it has designed and produced exclusive hydraulic tiles using locally sourced materials in its workshop, the only hydraulic tile workshop located in the Community of Madrid.

Mosaista has revived traditions but has also managed to bring them into our time with a bold combination of craftsmanship and design, without neglecting the style of classic tiles.
