On 9 February 2022, Miquel Iceta, Spain’s Minister of Culture and Sport and President of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection Foundation, signed the loan agreement guaranteeing the presence of 330 works from the Carmen Thyssen Collection at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza for a period of fifteen years. The agreement also stipulated that a significant selection of these works would be installed in the museum’s ground-floor galleries, previously devoted to twentieth-century art. This catalogue documents the new display, whose aim is to highlight the collection’s continuity and coherence.
The central focus of the Carmen Thyssen Collection is the evolution of landscape painting over the course of four centuries. The journey begins (Gallery A) with a masterpiece by Jan Brueghel, The Garden of Eden, and a dialogue, presented on opposing walls, between seventeenth-century Dutch rural genre painting and the Italian urban veduta, represented by its pioneer Gaspar van Wittel and the great Venetian masters Canaletto and Guardi. The itinerary then follows the parallel development of landscape painting in Europe and North America throughout the nineteenth century.
Gallery B explores American landscape painting between Romanticism and Naturalism. European Realism (Gallery C) is superbly represented by masterpieces such as Corot’s Solitude and Van Gogh’s Watermill at Gennep, alongside works by other contemporary French and Dutch artists. Gallery D, devoted to French Impressionism, is one of the highlights of the visit, featuring key works by Monet, Renoir, Pissarro and Sisley. By contrast, Gallery E presents Monet’s late work alongside that of his American Impressionist followers. A spacious area (Gallery F) is dedicated to Gauguin—centred on his most iconic work, Mata Mua—as well as to his collaborators and followers.
Gallery G examines Neo-Impressionism and its role in the development of abstraction, focusing on an important painting by Kandinsky. Gallery H offers an overview of the early avant-garde movements, concentrating on the dialogue between French Fauvism and German Expressionism, with major figures including Matisse, Picasso, Braque, Delaunay, Kirchner, Nolde and Goncharova.
The tour concludes (Galleries I and J) with a varied selection of important avant-garde artists—among them Léger, Juan Gris, Picabia and Delvaux—and a special focus on twentieth-century American artists, including Georgia O’Keeffe, Reginald Marsh and Richard Estes.
The collection on display provides an ideal complement to the galleries dedicated to the museum’s permanent collection.

We aim to have orders ready for pickup or shipped by the next business day after you place your order. Shipping to Spain typically takes 24–36 hours. For international shipments sent by air, please allow 3–5 days for delivery (not including customs processing times). In some countries where you can choose between air shipping and a more economical ground shipping option, delivery times are slightly longer if you choose the latter. For cancellations or returns, except for Print-on-Demand orders, you can cancel your order and, if you have already received it, return the items you ordered within 14 calendar days of receiving or picking up the order and receive a refund for the total amount of the items you purchased. With some exceptions, if the order was shipped to mainland Spain, we will send a courier to pick it up and cover the round-trip shipping costs.
