"When in May 1961 Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza (1921-2002) acquired a watercolor by the German painter Emil Nolde, he initiated a change of course in the collecting of the Thyssen saga. If during the interwar period his father, Heinrich Thyssen (1875-1947), had assembled an extraordinary collection of old masters, between the sixties and nineties of the last century he developed an intense collecting activity of the main artistic movements of the twentieth century, among which expressionism would occupy a primary place.
In 1993, when the Spanish State acquired the majority of the Thyssen collection, a significant selection of German Expressionist works became part of the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, an art form previously absent from Spanish collections. However, it is worth noting that a select group of Expressionist paintings remained in the possession of Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza's wife, Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza, and their children. Now, the exhibition "German Expressionism in the Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection" reunites them for the first time in several decades, and this publication reports on the event.
With this presentation, we abandon the chronological arrangement that normally displays Expressionism in the Museum's galleries and offer a renewed vision that is fundamentally structured around three concepts that always interested the collector: the process of creating the paintings, the evolution of the public and critical echo they received through successive exhibitions, and finally, Hans Heinrich Thyssen's relationship with the dealers who helped him shape his collection and the exhibition projects he organized, guided by his desire to disseminate it in the international context.

For cancellations or returns, except for Print-on-Demand orders, you can cancel your order and, if you have already received it, return the items you ordered within 14 calendar days of receiving or picking up the order and receive a refund for the total amount of the items you purchased. With some exceptions, if the order was shipped to mainland Spain, we will send a courier to pick it up and cover the round-trip shipping costs.
