Bilingual edition, Spanish and English
Perhaps it is true that the best-told stories are those that are put together from snippets and fragments; those that expect and require the viewer to make the effort to piece together the ultimate meaning, to fill in the gaps left by the narrative. Cinema knows a lot about that, which is why we always go back for more. After over a century of the cinematic gaze, we now know that seeing is not enough. There must be room for divination.
But I am not sure if linking collage with filmmaking and its need for fragments might not be a banal way of approaching the paradox – even though cinema is closely connected with the fragmentary nature of collage, the possibilities of a reality made up of gaps, despite its superimposed appearance. I say banal because the collages shown here are the work of an outstanding film director:
Isabel Coixet.
