Hammershoi Teaching Guide

This guide is not meant to be read linearly from beginning to end, nor to be followed verbatim during your visit. It is more useful as a toolbox that you can use to plan your tour, to explore only certain works, or to revisit specific paintings later.

Vilhelm Hammersoi painted seemingly simple things: dimly lit rooms, half-open doors... What's strange is not the subject matter, but the way he constructed the scene. Instead of seeking out striking details, he lowered the volume and relied on light, doorways, and the posture of the figures to make the painting work with very little.
