American Art in the Thyssen Collection is the result of a research project, funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art, to study and reinterpret the collection of American art that Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza (1921-2002) amassed over more than three decades. This project is part of the events celebrating the centenary of his birth.
As a result of this collecting, the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza has an extensive selection of American painting, especially from the 19th century, and has become an essential point of reference for its knowledge in the European context. As a result of this project, this book and a temporary exhibition are being presented. The exhibition is divided into four large thematic sections and aims to rethink the collection of American art from a transversal perspective, through categories such as history, politics, science, the environment, material culture or urban life, and considering aspects of gender, ethnicity, class or language, among others, to facilitate a deeper understanding of the complexities of American art and culture.
This publication gives an account of the exhibition, with texts that provide context and delve deeper into the approach, while bringing together the 140 selected works from the museum's permanent collection, the Carmen Thyssen collection and loans from the Thyssen family.

We aim to have orders ready for pickup or shipped by the next business day after you place your order. Shipping to Spain typically takes 24–36 hours. For international shipments sent by air, please allow 3–5 days for delivery (not including customs processing times). In some countries where you can choose between air shipping and a more economical ground shipping option, delivery times are slightly longer if you choose the latter. For cancellations or returns, except for Print-on-Demand orders, you can cancel your order and, if you have already received it, return the items you ordered within 14 calendar days of receiving or picking up the order and receive a refund for the total amount of the items you purchased. With some exceptions, if the order was shipped to mainland Spain, we will send a courier to pick it up and cover the round-trip shipping costs.
