Masterpieces from Budapest. From the Renaissance to the Avant-garde is the catalogue for the exhibition of the same name which brings together ninety works of the highest quality from the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest and the Hungarian National Gallery in Madrid. The Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest opened its doors on 1 December 1906, although it had been established ten years earlier, in 1896. Its collections, with an international profile, grew through donations and purchases, such as that made to Miklós Esterházy in 1870, who is considered one of the pillars of the current museum, or that of Count János Pálffy in 1912. The Hungarian National Gallery, dedicated exclusively to the country's art, was officially established in 1957 and since 1974 has had its headquarters in the Buda Royal Palace complex, where great works of art dating from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century are exhibited. In the selection of pieces in this publication, the reader will find not only paintings, but also drawings and sculptures that reflect the richness and quality of the collections held by both institutions.
