In this publication we focus on Rembrandt's facet as a portraitist, a genre in which the most important Dutch painter of the 17th century reached the highest level. Along with twenty of his portraits, there are outstanding examples of other artists active like him in Amsterdam during the Dutch "Golden Age", adding up to a total of 80 paintings and 16 engravings. When Rembrandt arrived in Amsterdam at the beginning of the 1630s, there were already portrait painters in the city such as Thomas de Keyser or Frans Hals -resident in the nearby town of Haarlem but with clients in the capital-, who responded to a high market demand. After him, others continued to arrive, such as Bartholomeus van der Helst, attracted by the business opportunities. The exhibition held at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, curated by Norbert E. Middelkoop, curator of the Amsterdam Museum, and this accompanying publication, allow visitors to discover the variety and quality of these works and to become familiar with the stories behind the subjects portrayed: married couples, craftsmen at work, children, scholars, businessmen, the painters themselves, as well as outstanding group portraits.
