Educational guide for the temporary exhibition "Terrafilia. Beyond the Human in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collections".
Terrafilia, a term that combines the words Terra (Earth) and filia (love and friendship), expresses a deep connection of affection and responsibility for the Earth and its inhabitants. However, loving the Earth is different from loving nature. It means pledging allegiance to animals, plants, terrestrial beings and supernatural creatures, and at the same time, rethinking humanity's place within the interwoven web of life. This exhibition uses art to imagine and guide us towards transformative ways of being in the world, to reveal inter-species kinship, new kinds of collectivities and planetary care. It proposes a readjustment of cultural and political spaces beyond the human, opening the way to a new era of ecological and planetary thinking.
Organised in collaboration with TBA21 Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, Terrafilia brings together around a hundred works spanning five centuries and covering an evocative spectrum of artistic and intellectual explorations that reveal the depth and scope of stories that go beyond the human and address a multi-species renewal.
Seven thematic scenarios propose different ways of creating worlds and relating to the Earth through myth, science, dreams, stories, spirituality, land-water relations and political ecology.
This is the didactic guide for this temporary exhibition.
