Catalogue published on the occasion of the exhibition Rafael Moneo. A theoretical reflection from the profession. Archival materials (1961-2016), a journey through archive materials and the first major retrospective of the Spanish architect.
Since his early proposal for the Plaza del Obradoiro in Santiago de Compostela (1962), Rafael Moneo's architecture has shown that it resists the temptation to create a recognizable style of its own or to fall too easily into the trends of each era, deeply involving his projects with the specific problems they face. It is also difficult to separate Rafael Moneo's writings and teaching from his own professional work as an architect. Ideas about composition, typology, construction or place have occupied a relevant plane throughout his career. But perhaps it is the reflection on how buildings are linked to the history of architecture and the city that will be the pedagogical reflection that will be most decisive in the development of his work and that of different generations of architects educated by him. This volume traces the professional history of an architect who sought to define an approach to architectural design on a stable disciplinary basis amidst the changing conditions of his time, taking the difficult position of claiming architecture as culture and as a specific form of knowledge. But this narrative not only unfolds before our eyes the work of a particular architect, but also reflects an important part of the history of recent architecture through his eyes.
