This exhibition, produced primarily with funds from the Museo del Prado itself, addresses the role of women in the Spanish art system in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Through a tour structured into two main areas, it first allows us to recognise the image of women that the State legitimised through prizes, exhibitions and museums, as well as the place they occupied in society. And then, thanks to the exhibition of some of the most important works of plastic art produced by women in Spain in the previous century – organised into areas that analyse the different dedications they played – it offers a basic map of the subsidiary role that the system granted to women.
The exhibition also shows the sometimes epic path that some women had to take to free themselves from the constraints imposed by their gender.
