"In Granada, my hometown, the festival of the Crosses of May, celebrated every May 3rd, is characterized by the creation of altars decorated with ornate crosses. Among the distinctive elements of these altars are apples with scissors stuck in them, a traditional symbol that represents the action of "cutting off" criticism, functioning as an amulet against negativity and objections. Inspired by this custom, I wanted to create an amulet-sculpture that reinterprets the ritual from a feminist perspective. With this symbolic gesture, I want to celebrate authenticity, feminine strength, and the challenge to patriarchy." -Marina Vargas.
